Triglycerides are a type of fat which can be made in the body but are mostly ingested in food. Triglycerides play a very important role in metabolism as fat transporters and an energy source. Triglycerides contain twice as much energy as carbohydrates and proteins. Ingesting foods which are high in fat can increase the levels of triglyceride in the body which can be dangerous. High triglyceride levels in the blood can also be a result of an untreated metabolic disease such as diabetes mellitus. Normal triglyceride levels are usually less than 150mg/dL and high triglyceride levels are usually 200mg/dL or higher.

High levels of triglyceride in the blood have been linked to atheroscleerosis and can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Reducing the levels of triglyceride by eating a diet which is low in saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol and carbohydrate is one way of lowering the risk of heart disease. Furthermore, reducing the amount of alcohol consumed can drastically reduce the triglyceride levels in the blood. Because alcohol can convert to triglycerides in the blood it is important to drastically reduce the intake of alcohol so the triglyceride levels can become normal or low., Physical activity is very important so try to get at least 30 minutes of high intensity exercise a day, five times a week.

One well established fact is that triglyceride levels can be reduced by omega-3. Omega-3 is predominantly found in fish oils and some vegetables. There are two types of omega-3: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which can be found in flax seed oil, canola oil and soybean oil and the second type is eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-both are derived from cold water fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and trout. Omega-3 is also available as a dietary supplement from most health food stores.
