Triglycerides are forms of fat that is present in the human blood. These are the most common in the body and they are very important energy sources which are formed from the excess calories that you eat. Elevated triglyceride levels are common among people who do not eat more calories than they burn. Normal levels of triglycerides are very good for your health but when you have elevated triglyceride levels, you could be at a higher risk for heart diseases.The elevated triglyceride levels are usually noticed when your cholesterol is measured. If you get a level of 200 or more, you definitely have elevated triglyceride levels because the normal level is just below 150.

There are several things that can cause elevated triglyceride levels including obesity, poorly controlled diabetes, a thyroid that is under active, kidney diseases, too much alcohol intake and eating more calories than you are burning. There are some specific medications that can also cause elevated triglyceride levels such as Tamoxifen, Steroids, Beta-Blockers, Diuretics, Estrogen and even birth control pills. In certain cases, elevated triglyceride levels can be caused by your genetics, but this is very rare. You may not get any symptoms if you have elevated triglyceride levels but there are people who get inflammation in the pancreas and this can result in sudden pain in the abdomen, nausea, vomiting, fever and the loss of appetite. If your elevated triglyceride levels are as a result of being overweight, you can lose some of the weight to lower them.

You can do this by reducing your calorie intake and doing more physical activities. It is also advisable to limit sugars, fats and alcohol if you want to reduce the elevated triglyceride levels. If the physical activities and diet do not help to reduce them, you can use medication to lower your elevated triglyceride levels.
