Controlling Triglyceride Levels

The Importance Of Controlling Triglyceride Levels Can Not Be Over-stated.

There are several factors involved in controlling triglyceride levels. First, complete lipid, liver function, kidney function and glucose with glucose tolerance testing, if indicated, should be performed. If the patient is a diabetic, the glucose levels can have a profound impact on controlling triglyceride levels. With that in mind, a poorly managed diabetic patient coupled with obesity can lead to serious health issues. Diet and exercise are the most important factors the patient alone can do for controlling triglyceride levels. Chances are these patients also have elevated cholesterol levels and low density lipoprotein levels (LDL) and low levels of high density lipoproteins (HDL). Patients who have uncontrolled diabetes, elevated triglycerides, cholesterol and LDL and do not exercies are generally overweight or obese and often referred to as "metabolic syndrome" patients. Metabolic syndrome refers to these types of test results and patients.

These patients should be guided with written guidelines of foods to eat and foods to avoid for controlling triglyceride levels. They should be instructed on reading food labels and how to choose healthier products. If this proves difficult, the patients may benefit from the services of a registered dietician (RD), who can instruct them on how to eat healthy, filling and satisfying foods. Patients may be instructed on how to add daily exercise to their routines, by beginning to take walks every day, for example. Increasing physical activity is an excellent therapy in controlling triglyceride levels.Other lifestyle changes can assist in controlling triglyceride levels. It has been shown that patients who consume a lot of alcoholic beverages and/or smoke cigarettes are at risk for the metabolic syndrome.

These poor health habits are all destructive not only in controlling high tryglycerides but general heart health overall. Patients should be gently told how seriously this lifestyle will affect their long term health. It may begin with small changes, such as eliminating alcohol. Then, add more fresh fruit to the patients' diet, while eliminating cakes and sugary foods. It is a slowly difficult process for patients controlling their triglyceride levels, but it can be a successful one.
