Triglycerides are a natural form of fat found in the blood. Triglycerides are created when calories consumed at meals are not immediately used by the body. The body takes these excess calories and converts them into triglycerides and stores them in fat cells. These triglycerides can be released into the bloodstream later to help meet the energy needs of the body.A blood test called a lipid panel measures triglycerides as well as levels of "good" HDL cholesterol and "bad" LDL cholesterol in the blood. A lipid panel is usually included as one of the routine blood tests during an annual physical.

A normal blood triglyceride level is less than around 150 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Borderline high levels of triglycerides are between 150 and 199 mg/dL, and anything over 200 mg/dL is consider high. Blood triglyceride levels can vary depending on the timing of meals, so fasting for 10 to 12 hours before a blood draw is necessary to get an accurate result. High triglycerides levels alone are not necessarily indicative of heart disease risk. However, high blood triglyceride levels tend to track with other risk factors of heart disease such as high cholesterol, obesity, high blood pressure, intra-abdominal fat, and hyperglycemia.

High triglyceride levels can also be a sign of conditions such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, and liver and kidney disease. Certain medications may also cause high blood triglyceride levels. Many of the same healthy behaviors encouraged to prevent heart disease and stroke can lower blood triglyceride levels. Achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet are three of the most important things individuals can do to lower blood cholesterol levels. Foods high in saturated fats, cholesterol, and sugar should be limited or replaced by more healthy foods containing monounsaturated fats or omega-3 fatty acids.
